You can do this by adding a color attribute to any list row.
As an example you can take a look at the app "REI3 Tasks", where colors can be assigned to task states. Depending on which state is active, a different color is shown:
Other apps also use this feature. Like "REI3 Tickets", which applies a color for tickets that have reached their pending time.
